The Handmaid's Tale is an American drama television series from 2017 created by Bruce Miller. The series is based on Margaret Atwood's award-winning and best-selling novel with the same name from 1985. The first season of The Handmaid's Tale consists of 10 episodes and premiered April 26, 2017 on Hulu. The series was renewed for a further season, which premiered on April 25, 2018.

The series takes place in a dystopian future where an extremely religious government manages the totalitarian country of Gilead (USA) after the Second Civil War, where women, so called "Handmaids", are forced into sexual slavery and childbirth in state employment. The lead role of June / Offred is played by Elisabeth Moss.

The Handmaids Tale won eight Primetime Emmy Awards from 13 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, and therefore became the first series on a streaming platform to win an Emmy. It also won the Golden Globe Awards for Best TV Series - Best Drama and Best Actress by Elisabeth Moss.

Plot:

In the near future, birth rates will fall next to none as a result of sexually transmitted diseases and environmental pollution. With this chaos, the totalitarian, Christian theoretic government in Gilead takes over power after a civil war. The society is organized by powerful leaders in line with a militarized, hierarchical regime of fanatics and new social classes, where women are brutally subjugated and by law cannot work, own property, handle money or read. Worldwide infertility has resulted in the few remaining fertile women in Gilead called "handmaids" are taken in custody against their will by the goverment, according to an extremist interpretation of the Bible. They are handed out to the ruling elite, where they are forced to ritual rape by their male commander to conceive and give birth to these men and their wives.
